New Key to Costa Rica

Rainforest View
View overlooking the road to Carate from a lookout near Luna Lodge
Luna Lodge is located on an isolated peninsula in the southern part of Costa Rica. This area is one of the most bio-diverse spots on the entire planet, and has been described as "...the most biologically intense place on Earth." by no less an authority than National Geographic Magazine. The main feature of the Osa Peninsula, and that which makes it famous throughout the world, is the 42,000-hectare Corcovado National Park, home to almost 400 species of birds, 140 species of mammals, 116 species of amphibians and reptiles, over 500 species of trees, and more than 6,000 species of insects. With 13 major ecosystems, the park protects endangered species such as the jaguar, puma, crocodile, tapir, poison dart frogs, and the harpy eagle. The expansive beaches of the Osa, especially those near Carate, where Luna Lodge is situated, are also major nesting sites for several varieties of sea turtles. If you really want to experience a lowland tropical rainforest in its most natural state, yet also enjoy an outstanding tropical beach environment, this is the place to do it.

Local guides will educate you about the wonders of the rainforest.
All tours at Luna Lodge are an experience designed to raise your awareness and to educate you about the lowland tropical rainforest. Our guides will do their best to share their knowledge and interpret the great diversity of life forms and natural settings in the rainforest.  The commitment to saving Mother Earth is part of the mission statement at Luna Lodge.  As one author wrote:

"Give people an ecotourism experience for a day and they will be impressed; teach them about ecotourism and it can change their life."

All tours are conducted with educated guides and begin at the reception desk.

Your guide will take you deep into the primary rainforest along a protected ridge high above the Pacific, where you will look for three species of monkeys, two types of peccaries, and the many other diverse species of wildlife that may present themselves. After descending along the trail through several levels of varied terrain, you emerge into the wide open spaces and fine volcanic sands of Carate beach, where, after a delectable picnic lunch on the shore, it's your call for the rest of the day. Swimming? Body surfing? Beachcombing? Frisbee? Fishing?
