Costa Rica Yoga Vacation with Lynn Matthews
Anusara and Level II Certified ParaYoga Teacher
January 14 - 21, 2012
Imagine waking up immersed in the beauty and serenity of Nature...surrounded by the sights and sounds of a tropical jungle. Each morning, amidst lush tropical flora and bird calls (perhaps even howler monkeys), enjoy a ParaYoga practice skillfully designed to renew your spirit and revitalize both body and mind. A healthy, natural lunch made with fresh local ingredients, then the rest of the day is yours .... to explore, hike, kayak, horseback ride, relax and take in the wonders of nature or indulge in a therapeutic massage. In the evening, a journey inward with the practice of yoga nidra, an ancient technique that deeply relaxes the conscious and subconscious mind allowing you to create positive changes in your life.
Lynn offers unique, thoughtful retreats held in beautiful, natural locations with the intention of providing you the opportunity to let go of the tensions and stresses of daily life so that you can reconnect with Nature and your own true nature...that of beauty and bliss. The experience will touch you in ways you cannot imagine. Whether you are seeking stillness, adventure, time alone or time shared with a close friend, the Costa Rica Yoga Vacation will give you everything you are seeking and more. Non-yogis are welcome!
ParaYoga® classes masterfully blend asana, pranayama, meditation, kriya, bandha, mudra and chanting to create an experience that leads you back home to yourself and helps you remember and reconnect to the light within you. Derived from the Tantric tradition, ParaYoga respects the deeper intent of yoga practice which is to enjoy life, to thrive and be as effective as possible while having a positive impact on the world.
Retreat leader Lynn Matthews, E-RYT500, has been teaching yoga for more than ten years. A graduate of the University of Virginia, Lynn has been studying yoga since 1997 and is a Level II Certified ParaYoga® teacher. She is also Anusara® certified. Her teaching embodies the art and science of yoga by seamlessly blending bio-mechanical principles of alignment with the deeper, more subtle aspects of yoga. Lynn uses the wisdom of yoga to help her students learn to manage the stress and busyness of their lives while reconnecting with their innermost selves. She enriches their experience by skillfully weaving pranayama (breath work), meditation and chanting into her classes. She brings humor, compassion and encouragement to her teaching. Lynn also teaches yoga nidra, using this ancient practice to help students learn to relax, reduce stress and define the direction they want their lives to take. Lynn is the founder of Yoga 4 Life and Golden Heart Yoga in Annapolis, MD. She developed and teaches workshops and nationally-recognized teacher training programs around the country. She also leads retreats in beautiful natural locations such as Sedona, Costa Rica, and Spain.
What previous participants had to say:
"Lynn’s practice is a wonderful combination of spirituality and physical challenges. Each person takes their own journey with her guidance and support. Lynn’s peaceful countenance is contagious!" Mary P.
"I can't say enough about Lynn's amazing yoga retreat to Costa Rica and Luna Lodge. The trip exceeded all my expectations. It is hard to believe that such a beautiful and fully featured resort could exist in the middle of the rain forest. We were very well taken care of. Proprietor Lana and her "family" at Luna Lodge took care of all our needs leaving us to focus on yoga and finding peace in the abundance of nature. The yoga space at Luna is truly inspiring. Built high on a hill with a marvelous view of the Pacific Ocean, the pavilion and soaring platform deck instills a connection with something greater than can be described in words. During our daily practices, Lynn led us through a wonderful mix of asana, pranayama, chanting and meditation. I could challenge myself at any time but was encouraged to follow my own path in a safe and nurturing environment. Lynn is a very loving and insightful teacher. She could sense where our group dynamic was at any given point during the week and adjust the sessions accordingly. For me this was not just a trip into the jungle. It was a journey inward as well. My path has widened after an amazing week with Lynn and our familia Luna." Brian K.
"Thank you for hosting such a wonderful retreat--it was the best that I have experienced. Your teaching of yoga[asana, pranayama, meditation and yoga nidra] in the great setting and service of Luna Lodge made for a most memorable experience." George K.

Soulcraft Intensive
with Peter Scanlan and Rebecca Wildbear
February 4 - 10, 2012

This is the popular five-day experiential plunge of Animas Valley Institute into the wild depths of Soulcraft; a synergistic set of nature-based practices designed to evoke the life-shifting experience of soul encounter. Your soul is your true self, those qualities that most deeply define and express who you are and the unique gift that you were born to bring to the world, a world so much in need of the socially transforming contributions of initiated, actively engaged adults. To encounter the soul is to discover the mystical image you were born with, which reveals the path to your greatest personal fulfillment as well as the essence of your true service to society (the cross-cultural wisdom traditions say these are one and the same). Soulcraft practices spring from nature-based cultures, modern depth psychology, the poetic tradition, and wilderness rites of passage -- to comprise a truly contemporary Western path to soul discovery and soul initiation. For a full discussion, see Bill Plotkin's book Soulcraft: Crossing Into the Mysteries of Nature and Psyche.
Peter Scanlan is a clinical psychologist in private practice for 28 years in Nashville, Tennessee. He trained with AVI and with the School of Lost Borders as a vision quest guide and has been an AVI lead guide for nine years. He is working on a model for the challenge each of us faces in joining our masculine and feminine aspects within the four cardinal directions of our human nature. He is dedicated to guiding people to the edge of the deepest inner and outer mysteries and holding sacred space while they plunge into those depths. He then honors to the unique power and truth of the stories that they bring back from those journeys. He brings heart presence and a playful spirit to his work.
Rebecca is a wild-hearted wanderer and soul guide who supports people to open to their depths and to flower in relationship to the wild Earth. The prayer she lives is to love and embody the Mystery and the Wild as they sing each being alive, evoking their truth and beauty. Rebecca has worked as a therapist and wilderness guide since 1997, and has trained as a guide with AVI since 2002. As an Interdisciplinary Yoga Teacher and a student of Hakomi experiential therapy, Rebecca brings a body-centered approach to guiding. She received her Masters Degree in Counseling from Johns Hopkins University in 1997.

Yoga and Movement Retreat in Costa Rica: A Healthy Start to 2012 with Ed and Lucy Paget
March 31 – April 7, 2012
Ed and Lucy Paget are highly experienced osteopathic practitioners, movement trainers and the owners of The English Osteopaths in Calgary, Canada. They have been teaching yoga and functional movement for over a decade. Between them, they’ve helped thousands of clients recover from injury through their one-on-one, hands on osteopathic treatment and movement education. In 2007, Lucy and Ed moved to Calgary from England. They were married in 2009 and had a daughter, Nina, in 2010.
They love showing people how interconnected the body is. They love it when people say “WOW, I’ve never seen it like that before!” It is very gratifying when people understand – and feel – how a tight hip has caused a shoulder injury or how relaxed their jaw feels after they’ve worked on their shoulders. That kind of ah-ha moment is empowering for clients because understanding why something has happened means they can do something about it.
Lucy and Ed’s shared mission is to deliver health through movement classes, extraordinary workshops and osteopathic treatment to educate people about just how amazing their bodies are. With their guidance and support, by registering for this package you will:
- Learn and practise yoga postures and functional movement exercises that you will be easily able to integrate into your daily life
- Learn about how the body works, which will support your understanding of the exercises and postures you are learning
- Find that you move more easily and confidently no matter what shape you’re in to begin
This retreat will be a great fit if:
- You want a friendly and supportive nudge in the direction of better health and exercise habits for 2012.
- You think that the way you move, stand and sit could be improved and you want the time and help to make it happen.
- You are looking for a winter escape that will give you lasting health through a combination of learning and movement.
- You love the idea of going to the jungle but want assurance that your jungle adventure will involve creature comforts, fabulous food and great company, not to mention the calming sounds of nature and expansive ocean views.
- You want to have a magical week that will create bright memories forever.
We will share eight breathtaking days of movement, yoga and relaxation, and seven nights of star-gazing and jungle sounds. It’s your opportunity to combine a nature lover’s holiday with a week of movement education grounded in the principles of functional movement and yoga.
